Family First Workshop: Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) & Mental Health Family Program

Our History

The Family First Workshop is a warm, bespoke programme created to guide families of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and emotional or mental wellbeing needs. Developed through the joined efforts of CW+, Best For You, Together4 Projects, and the Rising Futures Family Hub, this initiative was born from a shared commitment to provide early, compassionate support for families. We empower parents to recognise and respond to their child’s needs while also caring for their own wellbeing.

Our model is built on three pillars:

Knowledge

We demystify mental health, wellbeing and the SEND system so families gain a clear understanding of their rights, the processes, and the services available. This knowledge reduces uncertainty, builds confidence, enabling families and carers to make informed decisions for their child. Knowledge reduces uncertainty and builds confidence.

Empowerment

We focus on strategies that nurture resilience, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing — for both children and parents. Empowered parents are better advocates, and empowered children are more confident, independent, and secure.

Connection

We bring families together in a safe and supportive space to gain a better understanding of family dynamics, friendships, school environments, and the impact of technology.

Family First Workshop: Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) & Mental Health Family Program

A four-week, in-person programme that equips families and carers with the tools, knowledge, and emotional support to navigate challenging times and SEND, strengthening family and child wellbeing.

Week-by-Week Breakdown:

Parents are welcomed into a supportive environment where the foundations of SEND are explored, including key legislation and the identification process. The week emphasises emotional wellbeing, parental understanding of their child’s needs and their own emotional responses. It also introduces practical avenues for support within educational settings.

This session is about the support that is available for families. We’ll talk about what schools must provide, the extra help available outside of schools, and how parents can advocate for their child. Emphasis is placed on reducing family stress through collaboration, understanding legal entitlements, and ensuring emotional and social needs are addressed alongside academic ones.

This week we explore the close connection between SEND and mental health. Parents learn to recognise emotional distress in children, implement strategies to build resilience, and access mental health support services. The session also highlights the importance of maintaining parental wellbeing to positively influence the child’s emotional security.

Our final session looks ahead. Together we’ll explore how to prepare children for transitions and adulthood, sharing strategies for building independence and confidence. Family members are encouraged to stay informed, advocate effectively, and engage with peer networks to support long-term emotional and educational outcomes for their children.
